Beyond 1:1: Exploring Extreme Macro Photography with Laowa's Ultra-Macro Lenses

Most "macro" lenses stop at 1:1 magnification — the point where a subject is projected onto the sensor at its actual size. For years, that was considered the ceiling of close-up photography. Venus Optics, the company behind the Laowa brand, decided that ceiling was really a starting line. Their ultra-macro lineup pushes past 1:1 into 2x, 5x, and even 10x magnification, opening up a world of detail that's normally reserved for microscopes: the compound eyes of a jumping spider, the crystalline structure of a snowflake, the glaze texture on a piece of stoneware.

This article looks at what "ultra-macro" actually means, and breaks down the Laowa lenses built specifically for it.

What Makes a Lens "Ultra-Macro"

Magnification ratio describes the size of the subject's image on the sensor relative to its real-world size. At 1:1, a 10mm insect fills 10mm of your sensor. At 2:1, that same insect fills 20mm of sensor — twice the detail, twice the pixels dedicated to it. At 5:1, it fills 50mm, which is larger than most full-frame sensors entirely.

Getting there requires different engineering than a standard macro lens. Working distance shrinks dramatically (often to just a few centimeters), depth of field becomes razor-thin (sometimes a fraction of a millimeter), and lens aberrations that are invisible at normal magnifications become obvious at extreme close-up. This is why Laowa builds APO (apochromatic) correction into its high-magnification lenses — without it, colored fringing around high-contrast edges would ruin the shot.

Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro

The 25mm is Laowa's most popular ultra-macro lens, and it's built around a genuinely useful idea: instead of a single fixed magnification, it offers a continuously variable range from 2.5x to 5x. A dedicated ring on the barrel lets you dial in exactly how much magnification you want within that range, rather than being locked to one ratio.

That 40–45mm working distance is the lens's real selling point. Many high-magnification setups (extension tubes, reversed lenses, bellows) force you within a centimeter or two of the subject — close enough to cast a shadow over it or spook anything alive. The 25mm's working distance is generous enough to still light the subject properly and, with patience, photograph skittish insects.

This is the lens for jumping spiders, ants, snowflakes, watch mechanisms, fabric weave, and mineral surfaces — subjects small enough that even 1:1 macro leaves them looking distant.

Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Macro APO

Where the 25mm specializes in the extreme end, the 100mm f/2.8 2X Macro APO is the more versatile workhorse. It's one of the few lenses on the market that focuses continuously from infinity all the way to 2x magnification, which means it doubles as a standard telephoto macro lens and an ultra-macro lens in the same package — no swapping glass mid-shoot.

The APO correction is what separates this lens from cheaper 2x options — chromatic aberration is one of the most common failure points in extreme macro, showing up as purple or green fringing along insect legs, glass edges, or metallic surfaces. Reviewers have consistently pointed to the 100mm as delivering some of the cleanest, most color-accurate files in its class, and at roughly $450 USD, it undercuts most competing APO macro lenses by a wide margin.

Because it also functions as a normal telephoto at longer distances, this is the lens most photographers reach for as their primary macro tool, saving the more specialized options for specific extreme close-up work.

Laowa 24mm f/14 2X Macro Probe

The Probe is less a conventional lens and more a purpose-built tool for a specific problem: getting a camera into places a normal lens body physically can't fit. It's built around a long, slim, waterproof barrel — 40cm — with the optics at the very tip, so you can insert the front element into tight spaces, small enclosures, or shallow water while the camera itself stays well back.

Because the front element is so close to the subject and wide-angle in perspective, the Probe produces a distinctive look that longer macro lenses can't replicate — a wide field of view with the background still visible, but a subject rendered at true macro magnification in the foreground. It's a favorite for underwater macro, photographing inside flowers or machinery, and any situation where a standard lens barrel would block the shot entirely.

What's Next: Laowa's Parfocal Zoom Super Macro Lenses

In 2026, Venus Optics pushed the concept further with the Axon series — the first parfocal zoom lenses built for super-macro work. Traditionally, zooming a macro lens meant refocusing at every step, since magnification and focus distance are tightly linked at extreme close-up. The Axon lenses solve this by maintaining a fixed working distance across their entire zoom range, so you can rack from one magnification to another without losing focus.

Two lenses lead the line:

It's a meaningful shift for anyone doing serious extreme macro work, since it removes the need to swap lenses or extension tubes as magnification needs change mid-shoot.

Technique Notes for Shooting at High Magnification

A few things become non-negotiable once you're working past 1:1:

Focus stacking. At 2x–5x magnification, depth of field can shrink to under a millimeter even stopped down. Most serious ultra-macro work involves shooting a sequence of images at slightly different focus points and blending them in post (Helicon Focus and Adobe Photoshop's focus-stacking tools are the two most common choices).

Stabilization. Handholding becomes impractical past about 2x. A focusing rail on a sturdy tripod lets you make the tiny, precise adjustments extreme macro demands without introducing camera shake.

Lighting. Because working distances shrink and apertures often need to be stopped down for depth of field, more light is usually required, not less. Ring flashes, twin macro flashes, or diffused continuous LED panels (like the Probe's built-in ring light) are standard.

Manual everything. All of the lenses covered here are manual focus, and several require manual aperture control as well. Autofocus simply isn't reliable at these magnifications — focus breathing and hunting make it impractical, so precise manual technique becomes part of the craft.

Choosing the Right Lens

For most photographers getting into extreme macro, the 100mm f/2.8 2X Macro APO is the sensible starting point — it's versatile enough to use as an everyday macro lens and doubles as an ultra-macro tool when needed. The 25mm 2.5-5x Ultra Macro is the specialist's choice once you know you want to go past 2x regularly, particularly for small, easily spooked subjects where working distance matters. The 24mm Probe solves a completely different problem — access — and is worth adding once you're trying to shoot inside or underneath things a normal lens can't reach. And for anyone chasing the outer edge of what's possible with a camera lens, the new Axon parfocal zooms represent the most capable (and most specialized) tools Laowa has released to date.

Whichever lens you start with, the core discipline is the same: stabilize your setup, control your light, focus manually and precisely, and expect to stack several frames for anything approaching full depth of field.
